An extremely rare & important original silver portable sundial compass beautifully engraved with hinged bird gnomon signed & made by the great maker Michael Butterfield. This style of compass was heavily copied in the 18th & 19th century & to find an original "Butterfield" is extremely scarce. The Paris silver hallmark of a Fleur de Lys was used on smaller objects between 1684-1687
